abstract: In meiner Doktorarbeit "Die Verkettung der Dinge" behandele ich Adolf Bastian (1826 - 1905), den Gründervater der modernen deutschen Ethnologie, nicht als historische Person, sondern ich versuche vielmehr sein Denken und sein Schreiben nachzuvollziehen. Bastians Stil, der viele Leser verwirrt hat und verwirrt, perforiert den 'normalen' ethnologischen Diskurs, der vorgibt, seine Objekte souverän zu klassifizieren. Meiner Meinung nach bedarf es, um Bastian zu verstehen, einer neuen Weise der Annäherung. Diese Weise darf nicht � egal von wem oder was - festgestellt sein, sondern muss ambivalent und fließend bleiben. Wenn sie festgestellt wird, so wie jede Date oder Information festgestellt wird, verliert sie ihr Subjekt, nämlich Bastians Denken. Bastian schrieb mehr als 100 Bücher ' die meisten davon mehrbändig ' und über 300 Artikel. Doch vergleichbar mit einigen seiner Zeitgenossen schrieb er nur ein einziges Buch als eine so genannte 'work in progress'. Mit anderen Worten: Er schrieb eine 'Science fleuve'. Er wollte etwas verzeichnen, das ich den 'stream of cultural unconciousness' nenne. Er sammelte Ausdrucksprodukte des ethnisch Bewussten, von mir 'accounts' genannt. Die Struktur dieses Materials, die statisch ist, wollte er analysieren, um der sowohl eingeflochtenen wie einwirkenden unbewussten generativen Infrastruktur auf die Spur zu kommen, die Bastian als dynamisch und energetisch einführte. Er handelte so aufgrund seiner speziellen Kosmologie oder 'Kosmotheorie'. Um diese Theorie zu praktizieren, war es notwendig, Begriffspaare zu prägen wie z.B. 'Völkergedanke' und 'Elementargedanke', 'kosmische Harmonie' und 'Geschichte', 'Naturvolk' und 'Kulturvolk' usw. Ich versuche in meiner Arbeit nun, die Relationen zwischen den Paaren selbst und innerhalb der Paare zu skizzieren.  In der Tat war Bastian von vielen berühmten Wissenschaftlern und Philosophen, wie z.B. Herder, Humboldt oder den Vorsokratikern, beeinflusst. Ebenso hatten religiöse Systeme einen großen Einfluss auf ihn. Jedoch versuche ich es zu vermeiden, diesen Einflüssen mehr als nötig nachzuspüren, um Bastian nicht aus den Augen zu verlieren. Natürlich musste ich ihre Ideen und Gedanken berühren, aber in erster Linie geht es in meiner Arbeit um Bastians Denken; um dessen Verwendung des ethnisch und kulturell Bewussten zum Zweck der Detektion der Infrastrukturen des ethnisch und kulturell Unbewussten, das Bastian elementares Denken nannte. Auf andere Gedanken, wie berühmt sie auch sein mögen, konnte ich nur anspielen, doch konnte ich sie nicht im Detail ausleuchten. Bastian nahm diese Gedanken wahr, um sie zu �advertieren�, d.h. um sie der Struktur und dem Progress seines Werkes wirksam einzuflechten. Die Relationen zwischen den verwendeten Gedanken bilden die Infrastruktur seines Denkens. Ich versuche in meiner Doktorarbeit lediglich, dieser Verwendung Ausdruck zu verschaffen.
abstract_translated_text: In my thesis "The concatenation of things" I do not want to manage Adolf Bastian (1826 - 1905), the founding father of modern German anthropology, as a historical figure, but rather I try to outline the way of his thinking and writing. Bastian's style, which blurred so many readers, shatters the framing of the 'normal' anthropological discourse, which intends to classify its objects sovereignly. In my opinion, to understand Bastian a new style of approximation is necessary. This style cannot be fixed ' no matter by whom or by what ', but rather has to remain ambivalent and floating. If it is fixed, as every datum or information is, it will lose its subject, i.e. Bastian�s thinking.  Bastian wrote more than 100 books ' most of them have several volumes ' and more than 300 articles. But similar to some of his contemporaries he wrote only one book as a so called 'work in progress'. In other words he wrote a 'science fleuve'. He tried to depict something I call 'the stream of cultural unconsciousness'. He collected the products of ethnic consciousness - which I call 'accounts' - to analyse out of their static structures the interwoven unconscious generative infrastructure, which he introduces as dynamic and energetic. He acted so because of his special cosmology or 'cosmotheory'. Practising this theory he had to create coupled termini such as, for instance, 'Völkergedanken' (ethnic thought) and 'Elementargedanken' (elementary thought), 'kosmische Harmonie' (cosmic harmony) and 'Geschichte' (history), or 'Naturvolk' (natural ethnic group) and 'Kulturvolk' (cultural ethnic group). I try to outline the relations between these couplets.  Indeed Bastian was affected by a lot of well known scientists and philosophers like, for example, Herder or the pre-Socratics. Also religious systems had a big impact on him. I tried hard to avoid the influence of such under currents. Of course I had to touch on ideas other than those of Bastian, but I wanted to adhere to his ideas, and his texts. In my opinion, to speak about the well known thinkers more intensively would only open up a whole new can of worms. I had to allude to them, but I could not elucidate them here. Bastian perceived them and �adverted� them, i.e. integrated them into the structure and progress of his work. I attempt only to give expression to this progress.
