abstract: Gegenstand der Arbeit ist das Auseinanderfallen von Status und Geneses der hist.-ethnographischen Bildersammlungen (Foto- und Film) Spencers und Gillens in Australien. Der größte Teil der über 100 Jahre alten Sammlungen unterliegt spätestens seit den 1980er Jahren strengen Restriktionen. Einerseits wird dadurch das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen aboriginaler Repression in kolonialer Vergangenheit und Gegenwart aktualisiert. Anderseits läuf die Forschung Gefahr politisch gegängelt zu werden. Unter Einbeziehung aktueller theoretischer Auseinandersetzungen auf dem Gebiet der Medienanthroplogie versucht die Arbeit den veränderten Rahmenbedingungen von ethnographischer Forschung nachzugehen, und dabei das Verhältnis von Engagement und Distanz, Ethik und Ästhetik am Beispiel der Bilder Spencers und Gillens auszuloten.
abstract_translated_text: The 1901 photo- and filmfootage of the australian anthropologists Baldwin Spencer and Frank Gillen is one of the most famous pioneering work in Visual Anthropology. Based on reasons of political correctness the collections in Melbourne and Adelaide have entered political space. Since the 1980th they are mostly under restriction. The effect is an actualisation of aboriginal repression in colonial past and present, but it becomes more and more a handicap for scientific research. The present work follows the changed conditions for research in Australia in Visual Anthropology, and tries to analize the problematic tension between political engagement and scientific distance, ethics and aesthetics in Visual Anthropology.
