TY - GEN N2 - The present work is focused on the infrared optical properties of thin Ag and Cu films grown on MgO(001) and the Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) of CO on these metal films. During both the deposition of the metal films onto MgO(001) and gas exposure to the metal films at low temperatures (< 100 K) in Ultra High Vacuum (UHV), infrared spectra were captured in situ in transmission or reflection geometry. Afterwards the surface morphology of the films was examined ex situ by atomic force microscopy (AFM). For the first time, an infrared reflectance minimum was found during the metal film growth. The infrared optical properties of some films can be described by the Drude-type model or the Effective Medium Model. The Ag films show different surface morphologies at different substrate temperatures and at different final thicknesses. Also the SEIRA of CO adsorbed on Ag films is strongly related to the surface morphologies. The Cu films prepared at room temperature show island like surface morphology. SEIRA of CO adsorbed on Cu films shows differences depending on the Cu island size.
