Abstract

The autochthonous precipitation of calcite with the coprecipitation of phosphate was studied with regard to the importance for the trophical state and evolution of the eutrophic hardwater lake Willersinnweiher. Sampling of lake water in high chronological solution with the analysis of numerous physical and chemical parameters show the dynamics and reciprocal actions of the biological and chemical processes in lake Willersinnweiher. By sampling sediment traps and sediment cores the calcite precipitation and sedimentation in lake Willersinnweiher could be calculated. The phosphorus-binding forms in the material of the sediment traps and the sediment cores were investigated by sequential extraction in order to analyse the carbonate bound phosphorus. The arrangement of the phosphorus-binding forms of the particular materials from the lake water and the sediment cores shows interesting results about the phosphorus immobilisation and early diagenetic processes in the sediment. The consideration of the calculated phosphorus immobilisation by the coprecipitation with calcite within the phosphorus budget of the lake shows the importance of phosphorus elimination by calcite precipitation for the trophical state and evolution of lake Willersinnweiher. The results show that the phosphorus immobilisation by calcite coprecipitation in the lake water represents the dominating lake-intern process in Lake Willersinnweiher which removes large amounts of phosphorus from lake water and relocates it into the sediment where it is immobilised permanently. Thus, the process of autochthonous calcite precipitation with the coprecipitation of phosphate shows significant effects to the trophic development of lake Willersinnweiher and must be taken as a determining factor for the positive trophical state of the lake.
