Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

Research object for the dissertation are the installations in fluorescent light of New York artist Dan Flavin (1933 till 1996), which are to be analysed in three main chapters from various points of view. The first chapter will deal with Dan Flavin's art generally. Various approaches will bring the art into focus: a description of the art experience exemplified through two originals, presentation of the first art works from the end of the 50's and beginning of the 60's, an examination of the drawings for light installations and the working out of artistic principles in Dan Flavin's installations in fluorescent light. The second main chapter will raise the question of the correlation between Dan Flavin's art and so-called Minimal art. To this effect, three works from Minimal artists Dan Flavin, Carl Andre and Donald Judd will be comparatively considered; their assessment will encompass the Minimal art-looks, the integration of the space and the relationship to the viewer. The third main chapter will look at Flavin's art as it relates to the art of working with artificial light. The European artist François Morellet and two American artists, Stephen Antonakos and Keith Sonnier - all of who worked with artificial light, as did Flavin, in the 60's - will be presented as representatives of this approach. As Flavin's art has been called, time and again, "neon" art, a delineation with regard to the physical and ordinary use of artificial light will be drawn. Dan Flavin himself referred to his art works involving light as installations in fluorescent light. His works have been primarily categorized as sculpture in art literature. The first query in the submitted study will involve a critical scrutiny of the validity of this classification. From this viewpoint, Dan Flavin's art will be considered, as well as art works in their context to the 60's. In a comparison of Flavin's art with light art works and Minimal art, the question of this possible appellation will be narrowed down and substantiated. The second inquiry into the work will study the possible content of an installation in fluorescent light, to which a certain "lack of content" can be attributed. This raises the question as to what kind of new content may lie at the heart of Dan Flavin's works and which parallels exist to light art works and Minimal art. Aside from addressing these two questions, additional goals of this submitted work will include a survey of Dan Flavin's oeuvre as well as the positioning of the artist's creative output in an art historical context: on the one hand in the context of the modern, on the other hand in the context of art of the 1960's as it relates to Minimal and light art works.
