Abstract

The biographical section summarizes the present available information according to extensive research. On the basis of this knowledge the compositions, their generic context as well as their significance for the classical music development of Estonia has been analyzed. The focal point here is the composer’s principal work, his monumental oratorio Jonah’s Mission. The often quoted statement “Let us remain Estonians, but let us become Europeans too!” propagated by the artistic generation around 1900 reflects the ethical and esthetic objectives of Rudolf Tobias.
