Abstract

Die Metapher gilt als das wohl bekannteste Gestaltungsmittel der Rhetorik. Kognitions- und pragmalinguistische Forschungsbeiträge haben ergeben, dass das menschliche Denken und Handeln im Grunde metaphorisch angelegt ist. Metaphern sind nicht nur in der Sprache zu finden, sondern können auch multimodal angelegt sein. Sie werden etwa mittels Bild, Geräusch oder Gestik ausgedrückt. Die vorliegende korpusbasierte Inhaltsanalyse beschäftigt sich mit multimodalen Karikaturen zum Thema Künstliche Intelligenz (KI). Dabei geht es um die Fragen, in welchen Lebensbereichen KI eingesetzt wird und welche Probleme daraus abzuleiten sind. Hierfür werden thematische Kategorien sowie metaphorische und metonymische Konzepte untersucht und Typen gebildet, die Aussagen über die gesellschaftliche Wahrnehmung von KI treffen. Die Karikaturen verorten KI im menschlichen Arbeits-, Wirtschafts-, Politik- und Wissenschaftsumfeld sowie in privaten und kulturellen Kontexten. Probleme in Bezug auf KI sind vor allem die Sorge, dass sie dem Menschen überlegen ist, und die Angst vor einem Kontrollverlust über die KI. Die Forschungshypothese besagt, dass KI vordergründig in anthropomorphisierter Form metaphorisiert wird. Im Zuge der Analyse wird diese Annahme verifiziert und stellt eine Grundlage für die weitere multimodale Beschäftigung mit Metaphern und der gesellschaftlichen Wahrnehmung von KI dar.

Translation of abstract (English)

Metaphor is a well-known rhetorical device in language. Cognitive and pragmalinguistic research has shown that human thought and action are basically metaphorical. Metaphors are not only found in language, but can also be expressed multimodally by means of images, sounds or gestures. This corpus-based paper analyses multimodal caricatures that are concerned with artificial intelligence (AI) and its uses and issues in everyday life. For this purpose, thematic categories as well as metaphorical and metonymic concepts are used to develop hypotheses regarding the social perception of AI. The cartoons reflect the use of AI in professional, economic, political, scientific, environmental, private, and cultural contexts. They also reflect concerns regarding AI's potential superiority over humans and the subsequent loss of control. The hypothesis that AI is primarily metaphorised anthropomorphically is confirmed over the course of the analysis and provides a promising basis for further multimodal engagement with metaphors and the social perception of AI.
