Abstract

The majority of studies dealing with the health of mothers report worse psychological health of mothers as compared to women without children. Moderating factors (social and family Status, age of children, employment Status, attitudes towards mothers' employment, career motivation) are examined. Evidence shows that it is not motherhood by itself what is damaging to women's health, but the combination with the traditional role as a housewife, especially when the mother would like to work outside home. These fmdings are explained with reference to different role theories: the proposition that the traditional role makes women ill, the theory that combining the roles of being a mother and at the same time a working woman creates double stress, as well as the multiple role theory. Fit between role ideals and role reality seems especially important. Changing social norms regarding female behavior as well as the motherchildideology, which is still predominant in West Germany, are presented as significant influences on health of mothers. Future research lines are discussed.
