Abstract
Translation of abstract (English)
The iconological study discusses two singular works of art created by catholic gold-smiths of the baroque. Those gorgeous monstrances are located in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt in Germany and in the Austrian convent of Klosterneuburg near Vienna. They were executed by leading craftsmen from Augsburg (Johann Zeckl) and Vienna (Johann Baptist Känischbaur). Both masterpieces show an overwhelming wealth of material and are meticulously rich in detail and figuration. Once labelled as “Memorialmonstranzen”, they depict astounding unbiblical scenes. On the one hand side the bustling sea battle of Lepanto (1571) with the Christian victory over the Turkish fleet, on the other hand side the miracle of the found again veil can be seen, a scene from the hagiology of St. Leo-pold associated with the establishment of the Klosterneuburg Convent. By questioning the specific local genesis of both masterpieces and their spiritual denotations, the study reveals an extraordinary complexity of meaning in those extraordinary “vasa sacra”.
