Abstract

A Brief Discourse concerning the three chief Principles of Magnificent Building (1662) is the first of the two architectural treatises by Balthazar Gerbier which he printed soon after his return to England in 1660. The second treatise, Counsel and Advise to all Builders, followed one year later in 1663. Both works are still in the tradition of Alvise Cornaro and Henry Wotton, and others who followed them, pragmatic and empirical in orientation, and witten more for patrons, for men of the ordinary kind, and for executing supervisors, builders, and workmen than for elevated architects.

Translation of abstract (German)

A Brief Discourse concerning the three chief Principles of Magnificent Building (1662) ist der erste von zwei Architekturtraktaten, die Balthazar Gerbier veröffentlichte, kurz nach seiner Rückkehr nach England in 1660. Der zweite Traktat, Counsel and Advise to all Builders, folgte ein Jahr später (1663).
