Abstract
Die Rezension des Bandes ‚Macht. Glanz. Glaube’ - das ist die Publikumsversion des Naumburger Welterbeantrags aus der Feder derselben Autoren, die auch den offiziellen Antrag verfasst haben - erscheint zu einem Zeitpunkt (März 2017), als die Entscheidung über Annahme oder Ablehnung des Naumburger Zweitantrags wohl schon gefallen ist, aber noch der Veröffentlichung harrt. Der Rezensent kennt diese Entscheidung nicht. Er fühlt sich aber aufgefordert, noch vor deren Publizierung zu einem Thema Stellung zu nehmen, über das er seit mehr als zehn Jahren wissenschaftlich arbeitet und publiziert. Unter diesen Publikationen befindet sich u.a. seine Dissertation aus dem Jahr 2009, eine Monographie zum Naumburger Stifterzyklus 2012 (Zweitauflage 2013), und auch eine Kritik am Icomos-Gutachten zum Naumburger Erstantrag, veröffentlicht 2015 hier auf ART-Dok. Wie immer die Entscheidung von Icomos und der Unesco im Mai und Juli dieses Jahres (2017) zur Zweitversion des Naumburger Welterbeantrags ausfallen mag, sie wird richtig und falsch zugleich sein: richtig im Falle einer Annahme, was die Sache anlangt, falsch aber, was die wissenschaftliche Qualität des Antrags anlangt, und umgekehrt. Im Folgenden geht es ausschließlich um eine wissenschaftliche Bestandsaufnahme und Kritik der Beiträge in ‚Macht. Glanz. Glaube’, wobei der Rezensent gleichzeitig genügend Hinweise gibt, wie ein wissenschaftlich seriöser Antrag hätte ausfallen müssen, den die vorliegenden Beiträge des Bandes in Anspruch und Darstellung durchweg verfehlen.
Translation of abstract (English)
The following review of ‚Macht. Glanz. Glaube’ will be published at a time (March 2017) when the fate of the second application concerning the „Naumburg Cathedral and the High Medieval Cultural Landscape of the Rivers Saale and Unstrut” still hangs in the balance. ‘Macht. Glanz. Glaube’ is a short version of the first World Heritage application written by the same authors. After the first - unpublished - version was rejected by ICOMOS the public version ‘Macht. Glanz. Glaube’ served as a blueprint for the second (which still remains unpublished). Its role as a blueprint for the second application is evident by its cover and by other circumstances that will be discussed in the first pages of the following review. My motive in reviewing the Naumburg World Heritage Application is clear: I am obliged to let my voice be heard about my main research interest. I surely feel competent to take up a definite position and could refer to a series of scientific studies which I published on this topic. My first major publication is ‘Der Naumburger Meister in der deutschen Kunstgeschichte’ (2009) which is also my dissertation. It was followed - among many other studies and reviews - by a monograph ‘Der Naumburger Stifterzyklus’ (second edition 2013) and a critical review of the Icomos-report concerning the first application (2015). Whatever the decision by Icomos and the UNESCO may be, which are expected to be pronounced in May and July of this year (2017), the forthcoming decision will be both right and wrong at the same time. If the outstanding universal value of the Naumburg Founders’ cycle (Naumburger Stifterzyklus) will be the basis of the forthcoming decision the application will be accepted: then obviously the object itself will have made the decision. But an affirmative decision will be wrong with regard to the scientific merits of the application at hand. This disastrous result will be thoroughly explained in the following review.
