Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The dissertation examines for the first time the 42 oldest monstrances in Europe, i.e. those surviving from the 13th and 14th centuries. Such monstrances were used for the visible presentation of the host or transportation of the sacrament during the procession following the introduction of the feast of Corpus Christi. The oldest monstrance is from the Herkenrode monastery near to Liège (dated 1286); the latest is from Ratingen near to Cologne (dated 1394). The first part of the dissertation looks in detail at the establishment of the feast of Corpus Christi in the diocese of Liège and the gradual introduction of the festival and the procession in churches, monasteries and bishoprics troughout Europe. The second part examines whether transparent crystal sacrament vessels had existed before the introduction of Corpus Christi, and from which devices the monstrances were developed. Part three evaluates 10 pictorial and 46 text sources (1313-1404) based on the following criteria: design, materials, iconography, benefactors and patrons. Finally, part four classifies the surviving monstrances by type (tabernacle, disc-shaped, tower-shaped, pyx-shaped, angel-statuette, relic/ holy sacrament, horizontal cylinder and cruciform monstrances). Brief texts provide an overview of their stylistic development, regional distribution, symbolism and iconography (inscriptions and figurative ornamentation). Full description of all the monstrances are then provided again in catalogue articles. They are also dated based in comparisons with other goldsmith objects, and also with developments in architecture, stained glass and book illuminations.
