Abstract

The dissertation examines the problem of the development of an individual to a self identical I through the work of Max Frisch with the aid of the disciplines of psychology, sociology, and philosophy. The multi-perspective research is based on the assumption of the existence of an interrelation between the individual I and the world—both society and fellow man. It analyses the self-relationship of an individual in conjunction with the dialectic of individual and outside world, i.e. the external procurement of the I. The work understands identity development as an objectification process shaped by two major forces: the psychological self-centered I and the social provisions of the outside world. The research is focused on the balancing act of the I in the dialectical area of conflict between these two opposing forces. A self identical I is able to experience itself in its autonomy versus the external world, while maintaining relation to the world. The dissertation builds on these findings to examine if the self identical figure exists in Frisch’s work. The literary criticism analyses identity cohesiveness issues through a combination of psychological, sociological and philosophical perspectives. This multidiscipline view illuminates Frisch’s challenges to the concept of identity as a self-contained entity comprised of individual I and social I. The conclusion combines Frisch’s work with the previous findings to propose a notion of identity that manages to fulfill external expectations without suffering the loss of individuality and changeableness of one’s self through role-consciousness.
