Abstract

So lässt z.

The dissertation „Digitale Gespräche in einer virtuellen Welt?" (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg) discusses the localisation of Spanish leisure chat in the context of speech and writing. In order to provide a picture as comprehensive as possible of typed communication, both the medial context (i.e. the offline and online contexts generated by the computer) as well as the chat programs are outlined as a first step. A comparison of the chat services “Internet Relay Chat”, “Instant Messaging System”, and “Web Chat” allows the identification of the general constitutive elements of chat communication and the differentiation of those triggered by the technologies applied. Chat formats used in work and leisure context are differentiated, because both the quantity and the modality of particular procedures and elements will vary according to the reason of the communication. This distinction is particularly important, since most of the phenomena frequently interpreted as indicators for the location of chat communication within the context of speech (e. g. the high proportion of colloquial elements or use of emoticons) can only be considered as beeing characteristic of leisure chat. In order to then assess the degree of the effects of these different circumstances on the interaction during leisure chat, as well as the modality of communication performance at the linguistic level, the classification of chat as a form of communication or communicative genre is discussed. This is followed by an identification and placement, with reference to Beisswenger 2007, of the communicative genre of leisure chat as a subpart of the form of communication chat. Subsequently, the speech and communication theory basis for the localisation of the Spanish leisure chat within the field of speech and writing is presented. Speech and writing are initially examined from a medial extensional perspective, i.e. the characteristics attributed to spoken and written language as established in current research literature are examined and discussed within the context of the communicative genre. During the next stage, speech and writing are considered from a perspective that is independent of the form in which the language is realised. The model established by Peter Koch and Wulf Oesterreicher 1985, 1990, 2007, 2008 etc. determining the respective characteristic elements in a prototypically graduated manner, is examined critically. A consideration of the applicability of the concepts text, discourse and paradiscourse that takes place in the context of chat technology follows, as well as an examination of the proposals for a localisation of computer-mediated communication within the context of speech and writing as discussed in current media-linguistic research by Kattenbusch 2002, Berruto 2005, Dürscheid 2003. The theory of proximity and distance language developed by Ágel and Hennig 2007 is presented and examined in terms of its applicability to leisure chat communication. Based on this and inspired by Dürscheid 2003 and Ágel and Hennig 2007 a concept is developed, which combines the medial-extensional determination of speech and writing with their simultaneous prototypically graduated differentiation. The Spanish leisure chat communication is consequently identified as proximity speech by describing the special quality of the communicative proximity and attributing the linguistic particularities to the dimensions they have been triggered by. Doing so the study considers the phenomena using linguistic material from Spanish leisure chat Lycos to demonstrate the argument. Thus, for example, the self-perception of the chatter as a speaker or writer (i.e. the speech and text imagery used in Lycos Chat) allows conclusions to be made about the participants’ perception of the special quality of the written form. By using words like decir, contar, charlar, oír and escuchar, as well as escribir and leer referring to the production and reception of the chat communication the user take into account the interactive formation of quasi-synchronous communication demonstrating that they on the one hand are fully conscious of its difference from spoken language but that, on the other hand, are in conflict with their perceptions of prototypical writing.
