Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The present dissertation offers a prosopography of all persons, who either lived in or originated from the city of Aphrodisias in Asia Minor between the Hellenistic period and the end of the Roman Imperial period (3rd century BC – 3rd century AD). The study is based mainly on published and unpublished epigraphical material, but also on literary sources. The main part includes a lexicon of personal names, which comprises about 714 entries on 3480 individuals in alphabetical order: The individual entries offer a summary of a person's biography (where possible) and state all sources pertaining to this person. The analysis facilitates also the reconstruction of family ties and genealogical trees, and thus the study of larger groups. The prosopographical study does not only record information on the better known individuals at the top of the social pyramid such as high priests and magistrates, but on all people mentioned in the sources, i.e. also on slaves, artisans, artists or wet nurses. This comprehensive character of the prosopography allows in the second part of the dissertation to study questions of social structure (e.g., social conflicts, participation in political life), of the political developments within Aphrodisias (e.g., distribution of Macedonian names in the Hellenistic period, the spread of the Roman nomenclature and the civitas Romana among the population during the Imperial period) as well as of the significance of onomastics as historical source. Extensive indices complement this synopsis and their combination enables future researches on the history and society of this city.
