Abstract

The main subjects of this study are the tectonic breccias of the Barcaliente formation and their dolomites and calcites which indicate a high fluid participation. It has been proven in four localities (I. Ponga-Meré, II. Ponga-Priesca, III. Esla - Pico Jano, IV. Picos - La Hermida) in the eastern part of the Cantabrian Zone that the structures of the breccias in the fault zones are caused by fluid overpressure and that these processes are comparable. Petrography, cathodoluminescence, crushing, microthermometry, Raman analyses, combined Raman-microthermometry and analyses of stabile isotopes were used for this purpose. In addition to the four main localities, which are situated in the tectonic units, named Esla, Ponga and Picos nappe, samples were taken from three other localities to compare these with the breccias. Every one of the four breccias show indications of dolomitisation and the precipitation of five dolomites (a and e replacement dolomites, b, c and d saddle dolomites). Subsequently dedolomitisation and precipitation of calcites 2, 3 and 4 took place. Calcite 1 could be the oldest cement generation and even older than the dolomites. Microthermometric measurements of homogeneous trapped fuids indicate that dolomite a and b of localities I, II and III contain minimum precipitation temperatures of 100 to 130 °C. In locality IV, the minimum formation temperatures are 170 °C for dolomite d. The calcites 2, 3 and 4 of every breccia locality show temperatures of 95 to 145 °C. It is assumed that the dolomitising fluids, interpreted as formation waters, ascended during the nappe emplacement of the Variscan orogeny (thin-skinned tectonics) from lower units into the Barcaliente formation. These fluids could have functioned as a lubricate of the nappe geometry and could have been part of the first pulp of the breccias. The data reveal the similar processes of compex cementations in four different breccia localities covering an area of more than 900 km2.
