Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The present dissertation deals with the penultimate operatic work of the Czech composer Leos Janacek, ?The Makropulos Case? (sometimes also translated as ?The Makropulos Affair? or ?The Makropulos Thing?). It is a controversial work to a certain extent which has never achieved a public acclaim comparable to Janacek?s other mature operas. This fact, however, cannot be attributed to the quality of the composition; it is rather a consequence of the novelty of its musical language and, furthermore, of the complete absence of elements from Moravian folk music, otherwise so typical for this composer. The first part of this thesis depicts the genesis of the opera. It is mainly the extensive correspondence of Janacek which is evaluated here, besides other contemporary sources. In addition to the composition itself, this chapter also outlines the process of printing, the first performances and the German translation of the libretto. The second part of the thesis presents an analytical description of the literary work on which the libretto is based, namely the play of the same name by the Czech writer Karel Capek. The next section contains a musicological analysis of the opera's musical language. In addition to the investigation of the motivic structure (with Janacek?s own understanding of leitmotiv), this chapter contains a discussion of the harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements and their peculiarities and includes typical examples. The interaction between word and music is a further topic for discussion here, as it plays an extremely important role in the musical language of this composer. In the last section, the autograph of the opera is analysed. Here the genesis of the work is presented on the basis of surviving sketches and various preliminary versions. This chapter also contains a brief discussion on the third movement of Janacek?s unfinished Danube-Symphony in which he mainly used discarded material from this opera.
