Abstract
Mit dieser Arbeit liegt zum ersten Mal eine umfassende Abhandlung zu Leben und Werk des estnischen Komponisten Rudolf Tobias in deutscher Sprache vor. Der biografische Teil fasst nach umfangreichen Recherchen die uns heute vorliegenden Informationen zusammen. Auf dieser Grundlage wird das Schaffen des Komponisten im Gattungskontext sowie seine Bedeutung für die klassische Musikentwicklung Estlands analysiert. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei das Hauptwerk des Komponisten, sein monumentales Oratorium 'Des Jona Sendung'. Das vielzitierte Statement „Bleiben wir Esten, aber werden wir auch Europäer!“ der estnischen Künstlergeneration um 1900 spiegelt dabei auch die ethischen und ästhetischen Ziele von Rudolf Tobias wider.
Translation of abstract (English)
This doctoral thesis presents the first comprehensive treatise in the German language on the life and work of the Estonian composer Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918). The biographical section summarizes the present available information according to extensive research. On the basis of this knowledge the compositions, their generic context as well as their significance for the classical music development of Estonia has been analyzed. The focal point here is the composer’s principal work, his monumental oratorio Jonah’s Mission. The often quoted statement “Let us remain Estonians, but let us become Europeans too!” propagated by the artistic generation around 1900 reflects the ethical and esthetic objectives of Rudolf Tobias.
