Abstract

Eutrophication as a result of a high nutrient input, especially of phosphorus, is one of the main environmental problems of coastal and inland waters. It will continue to be a significant concern. To take measures against eutrophication, it is necessary to know both the state of the waters and the nutrient input. Because the concentration of pollutants in the body of water fluctuates with time, the examination of sediments is a favourable method to identify peak load and therefore some point sources of pollutants in waters. For this purpose the concentration of the nutrient phosphorus was analysed in different sediments of inland waters. A detailed sediment mapping for phosphorus of streams and rivulets in Baden-Württemberg (Germany) has been prepared. The phosphorus content of sediments from the biggest European river, the Volga River, and its tributaries is shown in an integral study. Random tests of many other sediment types were conducted. The lowest phosphorus-concentrations were found in sediments of shallow lakes in areas with low anthropogenic pollution, the highest P-content has been found in the river Klyazma (Russia) with a highly urbanised and industrialised catchment area. Peak loads and hints at possible point sources were found in the investigated regions. It was of special interest in this work, to identify phosphorus-phases which could be released from sediments under natural conditions, because after remobilization, sediment-bound nutrients can achieve a great influence on the trophic state of waters. With the help of differential solution, phosphorus compounds of similar behaviour or reactivity were included in artificial fractions (PSENNER 1988). It could be confirmed, that this method is appropriate to identify potentially mobile P-fractions. A relationship between the P-composition in sediment and the type of the water, the geology of the catchment area and the anthropogenic influence has been shown.
