Abstract

Aim of this study is the quantitative characterisation of the p-T-conditions of the metamorphic development of the Chañaral-Mélange, which were so far only qualitatively described as low-grade metamorphism under greenschist facies conditions. The Chañaral-Mélange is situated on the edge of the Atacama Desert in the coastal cordillera in northern Chile. It is interpreted to be part of an accretionary prism, which developed during subduction towards the N and NE. The Mélange is characterised by blocks of sandstone in a pelitic matrix, which show syntectonic extension veins filled with quartz. During this work metapelites and intercalated metabasites were investigated concerning clay mineral crystallinity, phengite barometry, b-parameter, mineral paragenesis and chlorite thermometry. The results were combined with fluid inclusion analysis in syntectonic quartz veins. For the first time the metamorphic conditions of the Chañaral-Mélange could thus be determined quantitatively as 300-350°C at 2,2-2,8 kbar, leading to thermobaric gradients between 30 and 40°C/km. Investigation of several fluid inclusion types in syntectonic quartz veins showed different phases of fluid activity. The oldest system is represented by prograde CH4-rich, hydrocarbon-bearing inclusions. An H2O-CO2-NaCl-dominated fluid with CH4±H2S is considered to represent peak-metamorphic conditions. An aqueous saline fluid with NaCl was active for a prolonged period during the p-T-history of the Chañaral-Mélange. Gaseous inclusions with CO2-CH4±H2S±N2 are considered to be the youngest fluid generation. The Chañaral-Mélange represents an intermediate level of an accretionary prism and was probably formed by underplating. It is an example for an accretionary prism, which does not follow the typical low pressure-high temperature p-T-path normally assumed for subduction zones. Further examples of this type are the Kodiak accretionary prism in Alaska and the Shimanto complex in Japan.
