Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The Bibliotheca Palatina at Heidelberg (until 1622), holding great numbers of mediaeval manuscripts and early printed books, was one of the most important german libraries of the 16th century. The latin manuscripts or 'codices palatini latini', today in the possesion of the Vatican Library (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana), enclose also a stately number of historical library catalogues, mostly of the 16th century. Unfortunately this vast treasure of historical information was rarely used up to now. The edition gives the two versions of the catalogue of the personal library of Frederic IV, count Palatine (elector since 1592), of 1589: Cod. Pal. lat. 1917 and 1918. The revision-marks of 1594 show, which volumes where meanwhile taken to the public 'Bibliotheca Palatina', which where on loan and which should stay at Heidelberg castle as private library of the elector. The aim of the present edition of a historical library catalogue is, on the one hand, to make this special source accessible, on the other hand to make those sources of historical information known and to suggest their use by students of cultural and scientific history.
