Abstract

Biographies of the bishops of Speyer from 1200 to 1272 with their interdependence with the policy of the roman-german empire. Discussed are Konrad von Scharfenberg (1200-1224), Beringer von Entringen (1224-1232), Konrad von Thann (1233-1236), Konrad von Eberstein (1237-1245) and Heinrich von Leiningen (1245-1272). Broader description of Konrad von Scharfenberg, "servant of three masters", who strongly engaged himself in the politics of Germany and Italy, as attendant and confidant of King Philipp of Swabia, chancellor of emperor Otto IV. and chancellor and counselor of emperor Frederick II. Whereas Beringer von Entringen and Konrad von Thann consolidated the bishopric, under the rule of Konrad von Eberstein it came to a political change, away from the emperor towards the pope. Heinrich von Leiningen was ambitious but without fortune. He failed with nearly all of his projects, especially he never entered the throne of the archbishop of Mainz or the bishop of Würzburg, as he had hoped.
