Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The thesis examines the dynamics and the composition of the substances in the construction sector to proof that the alreaday built environment may serve as a resource for future construction activity just as natural resources. The qualitative distribution of the substances is described by the degree of dispersion, a newly introduced figure to describe the extension to which substances are spread in the technosphere and thus their readiness for future recycling. The aggregation of all degrees of dispersion over all products in which this substance occur provides an efficient planning measure for the currently establishing reduction economics. The dynamics of the system is modeled by calculating average life-spans of products and fitting them into a cohorte analysis. The current volumes and masses of a substance within the construction sector are approximated by a systemic approach. The resulting model of a throughput reactor enables the prediction of quantities and composition of future waste generation showing the masses already fit for recycling and those that need further consideration and treatment. The model is applied to gypsum, a highly distributed yet not harmful or toxic substance within the construction sector. The use of gypsum is more than doubled since the last 15 years due to synthetic gypsum from flue gas desulfurization. With the help of the model the following scenarios are examined: how does a stop of coal combustion affect the availability of gypsum? To which extent is the technospherical stock able to substitute natural resources? Which requirements are imposed to a substainable recycling-fit construction of gypsum products with low degrees of dispersion and long lifetimes? How can we deal with future generation that will be 5-6 times larger than the current volumes? Which consequences can be derived for actors in the reduction sector?
