Abstract

In order to perform numerical diffusion-modelling a new paradigm, based on the Crank-Nicolson-algorithm simulating a three-dimensional isotropic diffusion of arbitrary elements in a spherical body, was developed. The new diffusion-modelling paradigm was applied to three lithological sample sets from different tectonic regions yielding their associated temporal quantifications of temperature and pressure changes. The garnet pyroxenite and garnet websterite xenoliths from the Marsabit shield volcano (north Kenya) document a three-phase thermo-barical evolution. The cooling, starting in the Miocene with cooling rates between -20 and -60 °C/Ma, was caused by the thermic subsidence of the Anza rift region. During or after the cooling, a decompression of approximately 0.3-0.8 GPa occured corresponding to an uplift of approximately 9-24 km. This event is related to very recent extensional movements. Finally, the very young (16-260 ka) heating was caused by the shifting of the volcanism from the Kenya rift towards the eastern rift shoulders. The modelling of the zonation patterns of Ni, Ti, Sc and V in the garnets of those xenoliths yielded the following relative diffusion coefficients: Fe-Mg > Ni > Ti > Sc ª V. The diffusion modelling, performed for the Fe and Mg zonation patterns in the garnets of the Alpe Arami peridotite body, confirms very high cooling rates between -120 and -2600 °C/Ma during a very fast cooling of 0.1-3.2 Ma. This cooling probably was caused by the incooperation of the hot peridotite body into the cold Cima-Lunga-nappe. The duration of the high temperature metamorphism (T = 870-980 °C, P * 1.0-1.5 GPa) of the granulites from the metamorphic soles of the Central Dinaric Ophiolite Belt have been determined to have lasted < 1 Ma. This very short period of time supports the assumption of an intraoceanic thrusting of two parts of oceanic lithosphere and the associated contact metamorphism as the cause for the formation of those metamorphic soles.
