Abstract

The paper examines primary-school children and their time awareness comprised of the three components ‘time perspective’, ‘psychological time’ and ‘dealing with time’. To this end, the first chapters present philosophical, sociological, psychological and pedagogical time theories, using them to design research based on discussion guides for the surveying of 3rd-year pupils. The analysis of data generated in this way constitutes a special focal point. By means of empirically validated typing, six different children’s time types are drawn up – time-organisers, time-fulfillers, time-hedonists, time-victims, time-destroyers and time-sacrificers – and these are subsequently described in both prototypical and ideal-typical terms. Finally, thought is given to the possibilities, opportunities and limitations for a new time culture in schools, and consequences are drawn from the empirical research.
