Abstract

Recently, aeroacoustic problems and low Machnumber flows became more and more important. Direct numerical simulations result into a stiff system of partial differential equations for low Machnumbers. Furthermore, one obtains a multi-scale coupled system, where the unknowns are coupled on different scales. With the one-dimensional Euler equations the mechanisms of multi-scale coupling are discussed. Numerical errors introduce disturbing acoustic waves, which is explained in common by the way noise is generated aerodynamically. The quality of the used implicit Runge-Kutta methods with respect to introduced dispersion and damping errors is investigated. For discretisation in space unstructured grids with a collocated Finite-Volume scheme are applied. Also, estimates are given for the dispersion and damping errors generated by the space discretisation. Non-reflecting boundary conditions at artifical boundaries are essential and therefore, are modified to be used in an implicit time solution-procedure. Multi-grid methods are constructed to obtain Machnumber independent convergence rates. The results are verified with numerical test problems, before aerodynamic noise generation at the thick trailing edge of a flat plate is simulated.
