Abstract

This dissertation deals with a topic which has heretofore received little attention in the international study of Humboldt: Alexander von Humboldt's lifelong relationship with Spain following his stay there in early 1799; the perception of Spain that he propagated; and his reception in that country in the 19th century. In order to emphasize the dual nature of this perception process, each facet will be analyzed separately: On the one hand, Humboldt's view of Spain in his time, and on the other his agreement with the works of the first Spanish chroniclers. Differing viewpoints will be analyzed with regard to Humboldt's reception in Spanish society: the Spanish press; individual representatives of the scientific and intellectual communities; scientific institutions; the reception of different editions of his writings; and finally the perception of Humboldt in Spain's political arena. This dissertation represents an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating elements of both ethnology and history.
