Abstract

The influence of repressive coping behavior on the self-assessment of memory was examined in a group of 80 patients with multiple sclerosis. The patients rated their everyday memory by means of the Memory Complaint Questionnaire (MCQ). For assessing learning and memory functions, a German version of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (VLMT) was applied. Following an operationalization by Weinberger et al. (1979), the patients were seperated into three groups according to their results in the trait form of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSDS): high-anxious persons (high trait anxiety), low-anxious persons (low trait anxiety; low social desirability), and repressers (low trait anxiety; high social desirability). The difference between self-assessment and objective memory performance was calculated for each patient using standardized scores of the MCQ and the VLMT. Repressers and high-anxious patients showed significantly different results (p < .05): high-anxious persons underestimated their memory abilities, while repressers overestimated them. The low-anxious patients scored inbetween, but did not differ significantly from any of the other groups.
