Abstract
Laut Tacitus (Tac. ann.

According to Tacitus (Tac. ann. XI 21) there were five aspects which could exert strong influence on a senator’s political career: his wealth, contact to influential "amici" and patrons, high birth, good relationship with the emperor and merits. As stated in the first part of this PhD thesis, these aspects were also of relevance for the vigintivirate, i.e. the first presenatorial office that comprised four "collegia" in hierarchical order. So the wealthy patricians had the possibility to become "vigintiviri" much earlier than the other future senators did. The more influence or contacts to the emperor their families had, the higher in hierarchy the "collegium" was in which the candidates passed their vigintivirate. A detailed analysis of the scarce amount of sources, mainly inscriptions, makes us believe that the political career a "vigintivir" could expect depended on the "collegium" in which he held office. The higher in hierarchy the "collegium" was, the more successful the career a candidate could expect. A change in one of the five aspects mentioned above usually had a certain influence on the political career. The second part of this PhD thesis presents a catalogue which contains, in chronological order, the names of all men known to have been "vigintiviri" from Augustus until Domitian. It does not only provide their political career but also information on their origin and social life. At the end of the catalogue all those "vigintiviri" are listed who cannot be dated.
