Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The focus of interest of this dissertation is set on the individual experiences and interpretations of survivors of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, which are described by means of autobiographical narrative interviews held with some of them. A comprehensible description of the individual steps of the process of enquiry and analysis applied to such interviews according to Fritz Schütze’s method, which is founded on the abductive research logic, is given on the basis of two comprehensively analyzed narratives. The narrative in the autobiographical narrative interview can therefore be understood as a medium leading the subject to constitute itself in its historic existence and thus referring to its identity-establishing nature. In terms of empirical science, this dissertation centers on the connection between personal and social identity, taking the identity-threatening life situation into account to which the survivors were exposed during the time of their persecution. Within this framework identity is used in the sense of the socialization theory of the symbolic interactionism. The analytical part investigates the process dynamics, in which the narrators build up identity and subjective sense, with regard to their cognitive, emotional and motivational aspects. This will reveal the ambiguity and unstraightness of the individual life histories. The reflection on biographies brings psychic realities to light and refers to the confrontation with the experience of one’s own life history. This requires the comprehension of the individual person with its own interpretations and conceptions, needs and intentions of representation. Schütze’s concept of process structures of the life course, the assumption of a sequential structure of life histories and the biographically relevant chaining of events, refers to the narrator’s patterns of explanation and interpretations which are to be reconstructed exclusively within the context of the life history. The underlying research strategy necessitates the analysis of primary material, which – according to Schütze – is by no means just of explorative nature as long as the modes of investigation are repeatable and the results are verifiable. In the narratives the autobiographer’s emotions lend significance to his/her memory; this means that fear and hope within the context of the individual suffering processes are embedded into the relation of narrated and experienced life history. Apart from this, the focus of interest of biographical analysis is directed to the various coping strategies applied by narrators seeking to integrate experiences of suffering into their current lives. For biography research in the context of education science, special process- and biography-analytical findings result from the autobiographical narrative interviews held with survivors of the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Such narratives make it possible to gain an insight into individual and collective processes of learning and education of the individual narrators. Biographical points of fracture appear within these narratives. Hence, for many survivors, the question has to be posed which background of experiences impedes or prevents the narrative development of their life histories or why they can tell their life histories taking place in different contexts only within the reference framework of the holocaust. By using the autobiographical narrative interview, a comprehensive access to the lives of the narrators is possible while taking the personal perspective and the historic dimension into account. It turned out that the different spaces of interaction of the interviewed survivors of the Theresienstadt concentration camp create different recall patterns which range between reversion and marginalization of memories. The social framings before and after the liberation are decisive factors for the individual degree of keeping silence on the traumatic time of persecution. During the time of persecution and internment, role distance was rendered more difficult, i.e. distancing with regard to the norms and repressions as well as the abilities acquired during the socialization process for the shaping of existing role norms were impeded. From this the conclusion can be drawn that biographical crises are always also interactional crises. The degree of traumatic or post-traumatic suffering of the individual person depends mainly on the current interaction. Biographical experiences of change refer to a changed frame with regard to the processing of the identity-threatening experiences caused by the holocaust. Other social framings make it possible to use the potential for change which had not been applied till then. Conversely, repressive framings impede the use of the positive potential for change. A significant characteristic of all interviews was that all interviewed persons remembered the time of persecution as collective experiences and the time before and after the persecution as individual experiences.
