Abstract

The search for the "formal″ aspect within ″informal″ painting is the object of investigation of this current doctoral thesis. Prima facie, the contradictory topic points to the discrepancy between the concept, on the one hand, and the concept of art, on the other hand. The term ″informal″ suggests a homogenity, which neither in a formal nor in a content meaning ever existed. Furthermore, the term appraises each work of art defined as ″informal″ as per se a non-figural work of art, and cuts off this method of interpretation at its very beginning. Informel-Reception can be seen as originally connected with this discrepancy. At their very beginning, certain approaches towards interpretation come into existence, which in turn move the autonomy of art into the centre of consideration an thus detach it from its function of illustration. If you regard Informel-works of art in an open-minded way, it becomes clear that such references to an externally illustrative reality still exist. Refering elements of paintings mean an indicated concreteness in the painting itself and further indicate concreteness in the title of the painting. The intention of this paper is to render the proof that such references exist, and to use them as a source for a new kind of reading of Informel-paintings.
