Abstract

We have determined characteristic magnetic parameters, such as the Curie, the Néel, the spinglass and the blocking temperature, in synthetic titanomagnetite and ilmenite-hematite solid solution as a function of their chemical compositions. The basis for this investigation were temperature-dependent measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, the saturation magnetization, the remanent magnetization, as well as hysteresis measurements at different temperatures. In contrast to previous studies, one of the main aspects of the present work was a precise chemical-structural characterization of the synthetic samples. Syntheses were carried out in the Fe-Ti-O system and in the more complex Fe-Ti±Al±Mg-O system. In order to control the concentration of cation vacancies, the syntheses were performed under a broad range of temperatures and oxygen fugacity (1050 °C < T < 1300 °C; -5 ? ?NNO ? 5). Moreover, we took care to synthesize not only single phase samples, but also samples with different Fe-Ti oxide assemblages. At the end of the runs, the samples were drop-quenched into water. Chemical homogeneity of the Fe-Ti oxide minerals within individual crystals and over the sample were carefully checked using analytical high-resolution techniques (e.g. with the scanning electron microscope and the electron microprobe). Because measurements of the magnetic susceptibility (?) are increasingly used to identify and to characterize magnetic minerals in rocks, we have paid special attentions to the interpretation of ?-T curves and the estimation of the Curie or Néel temperature from these curves. It could be shown that the Curie or Néel temperature of Fe-Ti oxide minerals is overestimated if the „Grommé method“ or „1/? method“ are used, whereas the „peak method“ provides reliable values. Interestingly, the Curie temperatures of titanomagnetites estimated from ?-T curves were up to 40 K higher than those retrieved from temperature-dependent saturation magnetization measurements. The influence of the concentration of cation vacancies in titanomagnetite on the Curie temperature was investigated over a broad range of chemical compositions. Although, the Curie temperature of titanomagnetite (Fe-Ti-O system) decreases with increasing Ti-content, there are distinct differences depending on synthesis temperature and paragenesis. Titanomagnetites in equilibrium with ilmenitess synthesized at 1300 °C (i.e., those with the maximum vacancy concentrations) have up to 37 K higher Curie temperatures than titanomagnetites of the same composition coexisting with wüstite (i.e., with minimum vacancy concentrations). Titanomagnetites in equilibrium with ilmenitess synthesized at 1100 °C display intermediate Curie temperatures. This study also brings new results on the complex magnetic behaviour of Ti-rich ilmenitess (Ti > 0.7 cpfu) at low temperatures (T < 200 K). The Curie temperature of ilmenitess is inversely correlated with its Ti-content in the composition range 0.69 cpfu < Ti < 0.95 cpfu. We have observed that, the Curie temperature of ilmenitess in the composition range 0.69 cpfu < Ti < 0.95 cpfu depends on the coexisting Fe-Ti oxide mineral (titanomagnetite or pseudobrookitess). This suggests that the cation vacancy concentration influences the Curie temperature. In contrast to previous studies we did not observe any significant dependence on the synthesis temperature on the Curie temperature. Ilmenitess with a Ti-content of 0.95 cpfu surprisingly shows the lowest Curie temperature (40 K). For ilmenitess with Ti > 0.95 cpfu, the Néel temperature is independent of paragenesis and synthesis temperature but increases from 40 K to 60 K with increasing Ti-content. The spinglass temperature of ilmenitess lies between 30 to 35 K in the composition range of 0.75 cpfu < Ti < 0.92 cpfu and is independent of the synthesis temperature, the Ti-content and paragenesis. However, the spinglass temperature is frequency dependent. The blocking temperature of ilmenitess decreases with increasing Ti-content in the compositional range 0.76 cpfu < Ti < 0.86 cpfu. Ilmenitess with Ti-content between 0.86 cpfu and 0.92 cpfu have blocking temperatures between 42 K and 52 K.
