Abstract
Stendhals Korrespondenz registriert von ihren Anfängen (um 1800) an die Welt im Prozeß stetiger Beschleunigung. Das betrifft Stendhal, den Angehörigen der napoleonischen Armee ebenso wie den Consul de France, den Schriftsteller und den Europa-Reisenden Henri Beyle. Die Technik der Zeit hat die Zeichen auf Beschleunigung gestellt: Die Dampfmaschine (Schiff und Lokomotive), das Nachrichtensystem, die frühe Fotographie (Daguerreotypie) und so etwas Beiläufiges wie die Kurzschrift sind beredte Zeugen der stendhalschen Phänomenologie der wachsenden Geschwindigkeit. Auf eine solche Welt reagiert Stendhals nervös vorwärtsdrängende literarische Ästhetik.
