Abstract

Siena Cathedral is furnished with a resplendent pavement. Ornamental embellishments of floors in sacral buildings have been common since antiquity, but in the history of art, the delicately differentiated pictorial range of the Siena Cathedral is special because of the figurative visual narratives. This work examines some of the pavement fields of Sienese artist Domenico Beccafumi, which he created between 1519 and 1547 using the technique of commesso di pietre dure. Consulting surviving cardboard patterns, contemporary woodcut copies and works in oil, Beccafumi's composition and style are examined more closely, in particular with regard to the position of the fields and their situation in the thematic context of the church floor as a whole. The stories of the works of the prophet Elijah, told in rhombic, hexagonal and rectangular fields, up to the Moses and Isaac picture fields show a clear change in compositional representation. Beccafumi, for instance, increasingly uses figura serpentinata, reduces his palette to less colourful marble hues and uses more chiaroscuro contrasts beyond adjacent orthogonal, clearly delimitated monochromous areas in the stone carving.
