Abstract
Es ist keineswegs ein neues Phänomen, dass Menschen unterschiedlicher Gesellschaftsgruppen Abbilder von sich selbst oder anderen nutzen, um ihren ideellen und materiellen Lebensstil zu präsentieren. Gerade seit dem Beginn einer zunehmenden Bildung des breiteren Bürgertums in der Frühen Neuzeit dienten Porträts und ganze Porträtsammlungen als Medium der eigenen Einordnung in die Gesellschaft. Im Rahmen der Vorbereitungen für die Ausstellung Die Welt im BILDnis. Porträts, Sammler und Sammlungen in Frankfurt zwischen Renaissance und Aufklärung im Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität wurde die bisher kaum beachtete, etwa 700 Gelehrtenporträts umfassende Sammlung Grohte aus dem 18. Jahrhundert näher untersucht. Sie befindet sich in der Grafischen Sammlung des Historischen Museums Frankfurt und gibt umfängliche und teilweise überraschende Auskünfte über die Kontexte des Porträtsammelns in dieser Zeit.
Translation of abstract (English)
The use of images of one’s own social group or of others’ as a way to display one’s ideal and material lifestyle is nothing new. Particularly since the formation of a widespread bourgeoisie in the early modern period, portraits and collections of portraits served as a means for one’s self-representation in society. During the preparations for the exhibition The World in a Portrait. Portraits, Collectors and Collections in Frankfurt from the Renaissance until the Enlightenment at the Goethe University’s Museum Giersch, the Grohte collection dating from the 18th century was examined more closely. Totaling more than 700 scholarly portraits, this collection had previously received little attention. It belongs to the Graphic Art Collection of the Historical Museum Frankfurt and provides extensive and sometimes even surprising revelations about the contexts of collecting portraits during this period.
