Abstract

During the Nazi era, a new spatial understanding emerged for exhibitions that conveyed the basic ideological framework of the fascist concept of art. Whereas space had previously been understood as the area between the objects and the subjects, this new model established the wall as that which demarcates space. Things and people could be controlled within this architectural element. The context of the exhibition made it possible for them to become part of the political system in line with the totalitarian regime’s dogmas. In the following essay, this paradigm shift will be illustrated with the exhibitions Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung (Great German Art Exhibitions, 1937–1944) and Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art, 1937). This new concept of space influences most museum spaces even today. Under the label “white cube,” this model has become one of the most popular ways to design exhibition spaces and has been so since the 1970s at the latest.
