Abstract
Translation of abstract (English)
Lion Feuchtwanger was very critical of bullfighting in his novel "Success", published in 1930. However, his contemporaries, the writer Ernest Hemingway and the painter Pablo Picasso, were famous for their frequent visits to bullfights and did not hesitate to depict the cruellest scenes in their masterpieces, as was the case with the painter Francisco de Goya at the end of the 18th century, and what was the opinion of the renowned Spanish painting expert August Liebmann Mayer? The answer to the question of how the enthusiasm for bullfighting in all its cruel beauty translates into a critical attitude in their works of art will never be found: we must confine ourselves to describing human ambivalence.
