Abstract

Der badische Garteninspektor Johann Michael Schweyckert (1754-1806) liefert einen bedeutsamen Beitrag zum Transfer der englischen Landschaftsgartenidee nach Deutschland, der sich auf formalästhetischer und botanischer Ebene vollzog und durch ein weltweit agierendes, wissenschaftliches Netzwerk katalysiert wurde. Während seiner Studienaufenthalte im Jardin du Roi in Paris und in den Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew erwarb er fundierte botanische und gestalterische Kenntnisse und darf zur noch jungen Berufsgruppe der „botanist gardener“ gezählt werden. Für Karl Friedrich von Baden entwickelte er ein System aus Lustanlagen, botanischen Sammlungen und Baumschulen, die im Sinne der Aufklärung genutzt und instrumentalisiert wurden.

Translation of abstract (English)

The garden inspector Johann Michael Schweyckert (1754-1806) makes a significant contribution to the transfer of the English landscape garden idea to Germany, which took place on a formal aesthetic and botanical level and was catalysed by a worldwide scientific network. During his study visits to the Jardin du Roi in Paris and the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew, he acquired profound botanical and aesthetic knowledge and may be counted among the still young professional group of "botanist gardeners". For Margrave Karl Friedrich of Baden, he developed a system of landscape gardens, botanical collections and tree nurseries, which were used and instrumentalised in the spirit of the Enlightenment.
