Abstract

In der werkmonographischen Magistra-Arbeit behandele ich die im Zusammenhang des Deutsch-französischen Krieges für die französische Rezeption bedeutsame Zweifigurengruppe „Gloria victis“ (ein Verweis auf das Vae victis des Livius) des Bildhauers Antonin Mercié. Diese wurde im Pariser Salon gezeigt und fungierte in unterschiedlichen Ausführungen sowohl als Kriegerdenkmal (u.a. in Bourdeaux), als auch in repräsentativer Funktion im Hôtel de Ville in Paris sowie als kleinformatige Statuette in den Privaträumen von Sarah Bernhardt. Es werden zeithistorische und biographische Hintergründe geliefert, woraufhin die politische Ikonographie entschlüsselt und die Aufstellung in den einzelnen Kontexten erläutert wird.

Translation of abstract (English)

In my monographic Magistra thesis, I examine the two-figure group "Gloria victis" (a reference to Livy's "Vae victis") by the sculptor Antonin Mercié, which played a pivotal role in the development of the French Memory Practice of the Franco-Prussian War. The sculpture was exhibited at the Paris Salon and was used in various versions, both as a war memorial (for example, in Bordeaux) and in a representative function in the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, as well as a small-format statuette in Sarah Bernhardt's private rooms. Historical and biographical background information is provided, after which the political iconography is deciphered and the installation in the individual contexts is explained.
