Abstract
Eine Puderdose in Buchform aus den 1950er Jahren, gefertigt von Coty, verbindet kosmetische Praxis mit der kulturellen Semantik des Buches. Der goldfarbene Behälter mit Spiegel, Puderfach und einst beiliegender Quaste lässt sich wie ein Taschenbuch öffnen und verlangt durch seine Gravur eine performative Drehbewegung. In der Tradition kostbarer Einbände gestaltet, transformiert das Objekt den Akt des Schminkens in eine lesbare, kulturell codierte Handlung. Die Analyse situierte die Puderdose im Kontext der Kommerzialisierung von Kosmetik, der Diversifizierung ihrer materiellen Formen und der Ästhetisierung weiblicher Accessoires im 20. Jahrhundert. Als modisches Artefakt und Zeichen weiblicher Selbstinszenierung verweist sie auf die enge Verbindung von Körper, Objekt und sozialer Rolle.
Translation of abstract (English)
A book-shaped powder compact from the 1950s, produced by Coty, merges cosmetic practice with the cultural semantics of the book. This gold-coloured object, featuring a mirror, powder compartment, and once accompanied by a puff, opens like a small volume and requires a performative turn to access its contents. Evoking the tradition of luxurious bookbindings, it reframes the act of beautification as a culturally legible gesture. Positioned within the broader commercialisation of cosmetics, the diversification of material forms, and the aestheticisation of feminine accessories in the twentieth century, the compact functions as both fashion artefact and symbol of self-fashioning—highlighting the entanglement of body, object, and social identity.
