Abstract
This article examines the origin of the gemstone illustrations labelled ‘Maffei‘ in Bernard de Montfaucon’s L’antiquité expliquée (1719). Montfaucon’s illustrations are largely based on Paolo Alessandro Maffei’s Gemme antiche figurate (1707–1709), which in turn compiles earlier printed works, most notably Leonardo Agostini’s work of the same title (1657/1669). Through an analysis of the history of editions and reproductions, this article traces how pictorial motifs and inscriptions changed across successive reprints, thereby illuminating the complex processes of reception and reproduction of artefacts regarded as ancient in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century printmaking. At the same time, it demonstrates how engraved gemstones in modern collections can be identified through the study of these processes of reception and reproduction.

Der Beitrag untersucht die Herkunft der Gemmenabbildungen mit der Quellenangabe „Maffei“ in Bernard de Montfaucons L’antiquité expliquée (1719). Montfaucons Darstellungen basieren maßgeblich auf Paolo Alessandro Maffeis Gemme antiche figurate (1707–1709), die wiederum eine Zusammenstellung älterer Druckwerke sind, insbesondere von Leonardo Agostinis gleichnamigem Werk (1657/1669). Eine Analyse der Editions- und Kopiengeschichte zeigt, wie sich die Bildmotive und Beschriftungen über mehrere Neuauflagen hinweg veränderten, und beleuchtet so die vielschichtigen Prozesse der Rezeption und Reproduktion von für antik gehaltenen Artefakten in der Druckgrafik des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts. Zugleich zeigt der Beitrag, wie sich einzelne Gemmen in heutigen Sammlungen mittels Erforschung der Rezeptions- und Reproduktionsprozesse identifizieren lassen.
