Abstract

In this thesis, a method for determining the diffusion coefficients of dissolved gases in water using air-water gas transfer was optimised. It was used that the gas transfer rate is limited by the diffusion through the boundary layer. The gas transfer is measured using mass balance methods. With a membrane inlet mass spectrometer the concentration curves required for this are measured. In this thesis, the experimental settings, i.e. the air-sided flushing rate, the water level, the turbulence conditions at the water surface and the flow conditions around the membrane inlet of the mass spectrometer, were optimised and a new gassing system of the water was set up. Measurements of diffusion coefficients were carried out with the optimised experimental settings. With a calibration to the diffusion coefficients of He, Kr and O2, the diffusion coefficients of SF6, CO2, Ar and CF4 in water at T=25 °C were determined as D(SF6)=(0.92 ± 0.06) · 10^(-5)cm^2/s, D(CO2)=(2.19 ± 0.10) · 10^(-5)cm^2/s, D(Ar)=(2.25 ± 0.11) · 10^(-5)cm^2/s and D(CF4)=(1.45 ± 0.08) · 10^(-5)cm^2/s. The measured diffusion coefficients agree with literature values for Ar, CO2 and CF4, but significant deviations were found for SF6.
