Abstract

Erstmals publizierte in: Raccolta Vinciana 31, 2005, p.145-180.

Translation of abstract (English)

This article offers a new reading of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous “childhood memory.” It seeks to demonstrate that in its language and imagery, this much-debated notebook entry is modeled on the prophetic dreams in Dante’s Purgatorio. Leonardo’s text seeks to articulate and express his sense of destiny, and especially his aspiration to comprehend the physics of flight and to pioneer human flight. Viewed from this perspective, Leonardo’s text also sheds new light on Leonardo’s narrative style as seen in his final paintings. First published in: Raccolta Vinciana 31, 2005, p.145-180.
