Abstract

Der Nürnberger Botaniker und Kaufmann Johann Christoph Volkamer errichtete Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts eine prächtige Gartenanlage, die in einer 1708 veröffentlichten Schrift „Nürnbergische Hesperides“ überliefert ist. Darin ist ein 1697 errichteter Gartentempel mit fünf Meilensäulen beschrieben. Die kartografischen Projektionen der Meilensäulen mit Nürnberg im Zentrum zeigen die Entfernungen zu europäischen Städten. Damit auch „Freunde“ die Meilensäulen aus seinem Gartentempel sehen und sich daran „vergnügen“ können, lässt Volkamer Kupferstiche anfertigen, die auf einen Zylinder geklebt werden. Der Beitrag kontextualisiert die bislang einzige erhaltene Kupferstichkarte auf einem Holzzylinder mit Mohrenkopf.

Translation of abstract (English)

The Nuremberg botanist and merchant Johann Christoph Volkamer built at the end of the 17th century a magnificent orchard for citrus fruits, which is described in a 1708 published publication "Nürnbergische Hesperides". It mentions a garden temple built in 1697 with five milestones (mile-columns). The cartographic projections of the milestones with Nuremberg in the centre show the distances to European cities. Volkamer had made copperplate prints, which were glued onto a cylinder, so that "friends" could also see the milestones from his garden temple and "have fun" with them. The article contextualizes the only preserved copperplate print on a wooden cylinder with an ethnic dark head of a moor.
