Abstract

Die Studie untersucht, wie der Maler Bernhard Heisig sich mit seiner Rolle als Täter und Opfer im Zweiten Weltkrieg auseinandersetzt. Am Beispiel zentraler Gemälde- und Grafikzyklen zum Kriegsthema wird interpretiert, wie die persönlichen Kriegserfahrungen des Künstlers im Werk zum Ausdruck kommen und zum Gegenentwurf werden zur offiziellen Historienmalerei der DDR. Diese Entwicklung des Werks von Bernhard Heisig wird kontrastiert mit den kulturpolitischen Kämpfen an der Leipziger Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst und in der DDR.

Translation of abstract (English)

This study analyses how the painter Bernhard Heisig deals in his artistic work with his role as a culprit and a victim in the Second World War. I tray to exemplify how the painter is expressing his personal experiences during the Second World War in several cycles of paintings and graphic works as a counterproject to the official historical paintings in the art history of the GDR. I analyse this development of a personal style of memorial-painting in the context of the politico-cultural fights at the academy of arts in Leipzig and in the GDR.
