Abstract
Die Rezension bietet eine ausführliche Würdigung der Deutung Schmids zu den ‚Naumburger Stifterfiguren’ und legt dar, wie viel Schmid den älteren Autoren, vor allem Willibald Sauerländer, verdankt. Gleichzeitig nimmt die Rezension den Aufsatz Schmids zum Anlass, die Mängel einer liturgischen Interpretation des Stifterzyklus aufzuzeigen, welche bis heute in der Naumburg-Forschung vorherrschend ist und welche auch Schmid favorisiert, um sie mit eigenen Argumenten zu stützen Indem Schmid ferner die ‚Synodalchorthese’ des Rezensenten angreift („Straehle, der sich in eine Deutung als Synodalchor verrennt“) und dessen Dissertation für untauglich erachtet („aus dem Ruder gelaufen“), sieht sich der Rezensent veranlasst, einige Missverständnisse über die ‚Synodalchorthese’ zu beseitigen und zu zeigen, wie ein oft übersehener Hinweis Willibald Sauerländers zum „juridischen“ Charakter der Naumburger Stifterfiguren einen ersten Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Zyklus liefern kann.
Translation of abstract (English)
The review provides a detailed assessment of Schmid’s interpretation of the ‘Naumburger Stifterfiguren’ and shows that Schmid’s interpretation is inspired by many older interpretations. Schmid’s essay also provides an opportunity for the reviewer to point out the shortcomings of a liturgical interpretation of the ‘Stifterzyklus’, which is still prevalent in the Naumburg research to this very day. Such a liturgical interpretation is also adopted by Schmid, who tries to support it with new arguments, but in vain. Because on the other hand Schmid is eager to attack the thesis of Straehle about the synodal meaning of the ‘Stifterzyklus’ (‘Straehle is running into an impasse with his ‘Synodalchor’-interpretation’) and to characterize Straehle’s dissertation as ‘out of control’ („aus dem Ruder gelaufen”), the reviewer sees himself invited to correct some misconceptions about the ‘Synodalchorthese’ and to show how an early remark by Willibald Sauerländer about the ‘juridical’ character of the ‘Stifterzyklus’ may provide a first key to a fuller understanding of the cycle.
