Abstract
The author suggests that Joshua Reynolds’ Idler essay no. 76 (29 September 1759) was not a direct response to the theories promoted by William Hogarth in his Analysis of Beauty (1753) as hitherto presumed, but a response to the Hogarth supporter, Benjamin Ralph and his book, The School of Raphael (May 1759).
