Abstract

The closer reading of Homers Iliad allows to understand that the narrator of the poem differently appreciates Trojan military conflict sides: While the Trojans’ cause is interpreted as in its essence unjust, the cause of Achaeans on the contrary is viewed as fully justified by reverend patriarchal tradition. Such an appreciation engenders essential differences not only in distribution of moral and military qualities between two fighting camps, but also in the tectonic interpretation of Trojans’ and Achaeans’ visual images: While the Trojans are mainly associated with something fluid and light by weight, Achaeans are chiefly likened to solid and stable objects. This distribution of tectonic accents as well as many other stylistic features of the poem indicates the classical nature of Homeric style.
