Abstract

We present the results of a multiplicity survey of X-ray-selected T Tauri stars in the nearby star-forming regions Taurus-Auriga and Scorpius-Centaurus. All of the stars were observed at K (2.2 µm) using 2-dimensional speckle interferometry and direct imaging. Our observations of 74 stars in Taurus-Auriga were sensitive to all companions in the separation range 0.13 to 13 arcseconds and up to a magnitude difference of 2.5 mag. We discovered 39 companion stars. Combined with the results of the preceding survey by Leinert et al. (1993), we find (48.3±5.3) companions per 100 systems, about twice as much as among solar-type main-sequence stars in the corresponding range of orbital periods. We find no difference in the multiplicity of classical and weak-line T Tauri stars. Our observations of 111 stars in Scorpius-Centaurus were sensitive to all companions in the separation range 0.13 to 3 arcseconds and up to a magnitude difference of 2.0 mag. We discovered 34 companion stars, corresponding to (27.1±5.0) companions per 100 systems. This is about a factor of 1.5 more than the binary star frequency of solar-type main-sequence stars. We propose that the observed difference in multiplicity is caused by different environmental conditions in the two star-forming regions.
