Abstract

In the physics of the atmosphere ice crystals are playing an important role. Based on their scattering properties they can have a strong effect on the solar radiation budget. The amount of solar backscattering is dependent on their size and crystallographic structure which is a strong function of relative humidity and temperature. Moreover ice crystals contribute in the main precipitation process at mid latitudes. The crystal growth rates determine the lifetime until the crystal deposits from the cloud as rain or snow. This work deals with the ice crystal growth on frozen micro droplets and silver iodide particles. The needed ice saturation at defined temperature was generated via the principle of a diffusion chamber. The morphology, the surface area and mass growth rates of ice crystals were observed in temperature ranges of -8 °C and -24 °C. The relative humidity respective to water varied between 87% und 106 %. The morphology and the growth rate of the observed ice crystal were in good agreement with literature. An influence of the electric field of the levitator on crystal growth was not observable.
